Grasping Darkness

GRASPING DARKNESS

The current was strong. Squirt was being tossed back and forth by the waves, carrying him further

and further from Lady. His only thought was how he was going to find his way back. He was, as his

name suggested, only a squirt. Too small to fend for himself and too kind to want to. Whatever

dangers lurked beneath the waves had the advantage against him. He could do nothing. As these

thoughts past through his head, something hit his head and his world went dark.

The next morning, the storm above had subsided, or at least, he thought it had. It was dark, quiet,

and cold where he was now. He couldn't see further than the length of one of his legs. In the silence,

he heard movement of water. More accurately, he heard the displacement of a large amount of water.

Turning to see what it was, an enormous tentacle rushed past him, displaying thousands of suction

cups and barbs. Squirt swam as fast as he could to some rocks he could just barely see below him.

Peaking around the outcrop, he saw the dim, ghostly glow of a creature of infinite size compared to

his small being. The Kraken.

Its eyes scanned the area like search lights for the intruder of its lair. Squirt ducked behind the

outcrop as the light passed over his hiding place. How was he going to escape now? The greatest and

most dangerous of his race now stood between him and Lady. With his situation looking more and

bleak with every passing second, Squirt sank lower into the darkness. The Kraken shifted forward,

not seeing the intruder and proceeding onward in pursuit. Squirt rubbed at his eyes. He HAD to return

to Lady. That was his resolve! Once the Kraken had moved passed further ahead, Squirt started

swimming straight up. He knew it wasn't the right direction, but it was away from the Kraken and

that was the first step.

Squirt swam through the darkness for what felt like hours, but in reality was only a few minutes.

Without being able to see anything, he might as well have been sitting in place. Then, from

underneath him he heard a crack then a furious cry. It found him. In a desperate attempt to get away,

he swam as hard and fast as he could. Lady was all that mattered at this point. From afar, he could see

the faint glow of sunlight. He was getting close to the surface. One massive tentacle rushed passed

him in an attempt to either grab him or hit him, whichever came first. At the last second, Squirt

pushed backwards as the tentacle sped past his face. He had to keep going, he was so close. Then he

saw her. Without explanation, Lady was mere yards away from him. Whatever the reason for her

being here, all he needed to know was the only thing standing between her and the Kraken was him.

The darkness was closing in.

Recreational: Origin Story part 1

Navarelth Reader Delgordenz

Shard of a scroll retrieved by monks of the Northern Monastery after a mass execution committed by a Black Dragonborn.

"Two years I've been walking the lands to the east of the kingdom I'm from because of a crime I did not commit. I was once the heir to the throne, but now those who swore loyalty to me and my family are pursuing me for my bounty. I've spent years before my exile training as a Paladin in the name of  our lord Bahamut and I have come even further since my exile began. Some nights though, I hear a voice telling me what it claims to be truth, but my instinct screams chaos.

Six months into my journey I ran into a small, unnamed village plagued by a demon possessing the villages guardian hound. In an attempt to cleanse the beast, I used the holy symbol of Bahamut on my shield to increase my power and drove out the demon; however, not all went as planned. The demon moved from the guardian into me in an attempt to possess my body, but because of my training in the Paladin order, I was able to perform a self-exorcism. Evidently, I was not as successful as I had hoped.

Every now and then I'll lose myself. Whatever shard of the demon that was able to latch onto my being takes over and I unconsciously act to its will. Thankfully, nothing wretched or evil has happened yet because of my distance from civilization. Once, I got close to a market village in the lands to the south, but took back control before I entered the gates. It takes all my training and will to keep in control of the hate that now dwells inside of me, feeding off of my fear, doubt, pain, and anger..."
